Full AccountabilityA Performance Improvement Plan (PIP) is a structured, time-bound plan that helps an employee who is not meeting performance expectations to improve. It sets out the specific areas that need improvement, clear and measurable goals, the support that will be provided, and a timeline for review.
The manager identifies the performance gaps and agrees on specific goals and milestones with the employee. The employee receives regular feedback, coaching, and any required training during the plan period. Progress is reviewed at set intervals, and at the end of the plan the outcome is assessed against the agreed goals.
Phi EDGE records each PIP with its goals, milestones, and timelines in one place. Managers and HR can track target versus actual performance, month-wise score trends, and historical KPI scores, add feedback at every stage, and generate reports, so progress is transparent and fully documented.
Managers play a central role. They clearly explain the performance gaps, set realistic and measurable goals, provide regular feedback and coaching, arrange training or resources where needed, and review progress fairly and objectively throughout the plan.
A PIP typically lasts between 30 and 90 days, depending on the role, the nature of the performance gaps, and company policy. The duration should give the employee enough time to show meaningful improvement, and it can be configured to suit your organization’s policies.
If the goals are not met, the outcome depends on company policy and the progress made. Options may include extending the PIP, moving the employee to a role that better suits their skills, or taking further action as per HR policy. A well-documented PIP ensures any decision is fair, consistent, and backed by clear records.
For employees, a PIP provides clear expectations, focused support, and a genuine opportunity to improve and grow. For organizations, it helps retain talent, improve productivity, and ensure that performance-related decisions are objective, transparent, and well documented.
