Frequently Asked Questions

What is attrition rate calculation?

Attrition rate calculation measures the percentage of employees who leave an organization over a specific period, such as a month or a year. It helps HR teams understand how quickly employees are leaving and whether retention efforts are working.

How do you perform an attrition calculation?

First, count the number of employees who left during the period. Next, find the average number of employees for that period by adding the headcount at the start and at the end and dividing by 2. Finally, divide the number of employees who left by the average headcount and multiply by 100. Phi EDGE does this automatically and shows the results month-wise, grade-wise, and state-wise.

What is the annual attrition formula?

Annual Attrition Rate = (Number of employees who left during the year ÷ Average number of employees during the year) × 100. For example, if 12 employees left in a year and the average headcount was 210, the annual attrition rate is (12 ÷ 210) × 100 = 5.7%.

Can you explain the attrition formula?

The attrition formula compares how many employees left with how many employees you had on average: Attrition Rate = (Employees who left ÷ Average number of employees) × 100. Using the average headcount rather than the starting headcount gives a fairer result when the team size changes during the period. A higher rate means more employees are leaving, which signals a need to review retention, engagement, and hiring strategies.
